Abstract

544,048. Spray carburetters. CLEVELAND, F. J. (Bendix Aviation Corporation). Sept. 3, 1940, No. 13806. [Class 7 (iii)] Fuel is supplied by a pump 30 past a suctionactuated regulating-valve 38 to a needle valve 98 in an air conduit 18, the mixture from which is discharged at 20 into a larger conduit 10 and fed to the manifold 16 by a supercharger 14, both of the conduits 10 and 18 being fitted with throttles 22 and 24 respectively, which are connected together so that one closes as the other opens. A cam 106 on the throttle 24 actuates the fuel needle 98 through a lever 102. The valve 38 is controlled by diaphragms 52, 56, the former of which is subjected to fuel pressure at the lower side and to atmosphere by a vent 50 at the upper side, while the latter is also under atmospheric pressure at its upper side by means of a vent 64, but has its lower side influenced by the suction in the air conduit 18 by connections 68, 72; 74. This suction is varied by a valve 96 connected to a barometric capsule 94 in a chamber 82, and also by a valve 86 between the passage 74 and the chamber 82 containing the capsule and vented at 84. The valve 86 is connected to a diaphragm 88 subjected at opposite sides to the pressure in the conduit 10 anterior to the throttle 22, and the pressure in the manifold 16. In practice, the vents 50, 64 and 84 are connected to the inlet of the conduits 10, 18, which may be supplied by a super-charger.
