Abstract

528,207. Charge forming devices. SOC. ANON. SOLEX. April 29, 1939, No. 12903. Convention date, June 8, 1938. [Class 7 (iii)] In an auxiliary carburation device, for compressor supercharged engines, having means for supplying to the inlet of the compressor when the engine has to furnish extra power, an anti-detonating or other supplementary fuel, the fuel is delivered solely under the action of the pressure downstream of the compressor and the delivery varies directly as that pressure. A small reservoir 8 supplied with fuel from a tank 19 to a level determined by a float 23, communicates, above the fuel level with the delivery conduit 13 of a compressor 1 and the pressure thus applied to the free surface of the fuel in the reservoir 8 drives the fuel up a dipping tube 9 into the air inlet of the compressor at 11. Valves 14, 16 in the tube 9 and the conduit 12 connecting the reservoir 8 with the pressure conduit 13 control the delivery of the fuel and may be operated simultaneously with the control lever 5 of the air inlet valve 3 of the compressor, or independently thereof by a barometric capsule exposed to the pressure conduit 13. The fuel may be discharged directly into the compressor at 11 or, it may be delivered into a passage or chamber communicating with the air inlet of the compressor upstream of the air valve 3 through a restricted orifice so small as to prevent the suction in the compressor inlet from affecting appreciably the atmospheric pressure prevailing in the chamber. A mixture of fuel and air may be delivered to the inlet 11 by exposing the fuel pipe 9 above its calibrated orifice 10 to the pressure conduit 12 through a restricted orifice not shown.
