Abstract

469,881. Variable - speed epicyclic gearing. WILSON, A. G. Jan. 1, 1936, No. 74. [Class 80 (ii)] A variable-speed epicyclic gear comprises a primary train A and a secondary train B. The planets j of the primary train and the annulus m of the secondary train are carried by the main shaft a whilst the planets n of the secondary train and the annulus r of the primary train are carried by the other main shaft b. The suns c and s of the primary and secondary trains A and B respectively are adapted to be held by brakes e and u acting on brake drums d and t connected to these suns to give two forward speeds of the driven shaft b, one higher and one lower than the speed of the input shaft a. A direct drive clutch f, g is provided between the primary sun c and the input shaft. In a modified arrangement, the planets of the primary train and the sun of the secondary train are secured to the input shaft a and the planets of the secondary and the annulus of the primary train are secured to the output shaft b, the remaining members of the two trains being adapted to be held to give the two indirect ratios as before. Additional trains may be arranged between and/or after the primary and secondary trains having members adapted to be braked to give two additional forward speeds or one additional forward speed and a reverse.
