Abstract

393,295. Variable-speed gearing. SWAN, J. G., 14, Old Square, Lincoln's Inn, London. Nov. 30, 1931, No. 13673/33. Divided on 393,294. [Class 80 (ii).] A coupling device or unit comprises an hydraulic coupling 12, 14, Fig. 1, interconnecting two gears 13, 24 of a planetary gear train 13, 20, 24 wherein a gear 24 which is neither secured to an input shaft 11 nor an output shaft 18 is connected through a free-wheel 114 with a brake drum 26 so that the gear 24 may be held or restrained from moving backwards but in free to turn forwards. Planet gears 20 are supported on a spider 19 fast on the output shaft 18. Such overrunning of the free-wheel takes place when the hydraulic coupling develops sufficient torque, and the speed of the shaft 18 varies automatically above the definite ratio yielded by the gear train. The power passes direct to the gear 13 on the input shaft 11 and also to the gear 24 through the coupling 12, 14. In the application to motor-vehicles, a free-wheel 21 allows the engine to be used as a brake. A modified arrangement is described in the abridgment of Specification 393,294 with reference to Fig. 3.
