Abstract
179,643. Simpson, J. F. Feb. 8, 1921. Producers.-Apparatus for the complete gasification of carbonaceous fuel comprises a water-gas producer 1 preferably surmounted by a retort 2 and hopper 15, and having two regenerators 4, 6 so arranged that an up or down blow through the producer may be obtained. The air main 12 is divided and its two branches, controlled by valves 12, 12, lead into blast pipes 10, 10 provided with stack valves 11, 11 and communicating with the regenerators 4, 6. The producer is in connection at its bottom and top ends with regenerators 4, 6 by pipes 3, 5 respectively. When valves 11, 12a are closed the air blast passes down through regenerator 4 up through the producer which is heated thereby and the resulting gases together with secondary air introduced through a pipe 9 pass up regenerator 6 which is thereby heated, the combustion products escaping by the stack valve 11. The direction of the blow is then reversed by valve manipulation and when the fuel bed is heated sufficiently, steam Introduced by an inlet 7 ,is heated in the regenerator 4 and enters the producer at the bottom, the resultant water gas passing up through the retort, partly distilling the raw fuel and passing through a take-off pipe 17 to a wash-box 18 and leaving by an outlet 20. Liquid fuel may be admitted to the retort by a pipe 21. During the blow a portion of the gases may be passed up through the retort.
