Abstract

404,083. Lubricating internal-combustion engines. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd., MUNRO, D. W., and PERKINS, H., Armoury Road, Small Heath, Birmingham. Sept. 7, 1932, No. 24885. [Class 12 (ii).] An internal-combustion engine, having a lip 3, slot 4 or opening, high up in the side of the crank-case 1 in which the fly-wheel is descending and communicating with an oil reservoir 2 located in front of the crank-case 1, has, adjacent to the slot 4, an auxiliary chamber 5 with outlet holes 6 in the front thereof through which oil can pass into the oil reservoir 2, the chamber 5 and holes 6 being so arranged, that, when the engine assumes an inclined position or is suddenly accelerated, the return of oil from the reservoir 2 to the crank-case 1 is prevented. Oil is pumped from the reservoir 2 to the big end bearings and falls to the bottom of the crank-case 1. It is then picked up by the flywheel and splashed into the cylinders the excess oil being scraped off the flywheel by the lip 3 and passed into the chamber 5.
