Abstract

248,563. Marston, Ltd., J., and Greenwood, J. E. March 7, 1925. Channels and reservoirs in engine crank casings.-Oil carried round by the enclosed flywheel 6 of an internal-combustion engine is caught in a lip or gutter 5 arranged on that side of the crank case 2 at which the fly-wheel rim is descending, and passes through a slot 4 into a chamber 3 formed by a hollow wall of the crank case. By this arrangement, whereby the oil caught in the gutter has been carried past the cylinder mouth 12, the lubrication of the cylinder is assured. A gear pump 8 delivers oil from the chamber 3 to the big-end bearing 10 of the connecting-rod through a nozzle 9. The bearing 10 comprises a double row of balls or rollers, the metal between the rows being cut, away at 11 for the passage of the oil.
