Abstract

435,146. Lubricating. PRESTWICH, J. A., 28, Canfield Gardens, Hampstead, London. May 14, 1934, No. 14578. [Classes 12 (ii) and 12 (iii)] In means for lubricating an internal-combustion engine, compressor or the like, in which a dipper 8 carried on a moving part sweeps through a trough 7, partly submerged in oil in the crank case 6 and fed by gravity therefrom, the dimensions of the trough and dipper are proportioned so that the trough is substantially emptied by each successive passage of the dipper therethrough when the engine is running at any speed within its working range. The trough 7 has holes 11 through which oil flows from the crank case 6. An additional valve controlled hole or holes 12 may be provided for increasing the oil flow into the trough 7 when the load on the engine is increased. As shown applied to a motor road vehicle, a hole 12 is controlled by a shutter 13 pivoted at 14 so that the hole 12 is uncovered when the vehicle mounts a hill. Alternatively, the shutter 13 may be operated independently, or by automatic mechanism. Specification 229,208, [Class 12 (ii)], is referred to.
