Abstract

290,413. Stevens & Co. (1914), Ltd., A. J., Stevens, H., and Stevens, A. J. March 29, 1927. Channels and reservoirs in engine crank-casings. -Oil is ejected from the crank case 1 of an internal-combustion engine through a transverse opening 2, formed in the bottom of the crank case and extendng from the centre in the direction of the enclosed flywheel, into a sump 3, the oil being thrown tangentially from the bottom of the flywheel. The forward edge of the opening 2 has an inclined wall 4, the lower edge 5 of which is slightly above the bottom of the crank case. An opening 6 in the forward end of the sump is fitted with a pipe connected to a pump supplying the engine parts, whence it returns to the crank case, the arrangement being such that the natural flow of the oil is towards the pipe. The opening 6 is fitted with a cylindrical gauze 7.
