Abstract

357,645. Mowing-machines. BAMFORD, J., St. Mary's Mount, and BAMFORD, C. J., The Parks, both in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire. June 28, 1930, No. 19686. [Class 6 (iii).] The supporting wheels 1, 2, of a mowing-machine are connected by a through axle 4 to which the hub of the wheel 1 is fixed and on which the wheel 2 is free to rotate. A primary gear member 12, free to rotate on the axle, is provided with internal ratchet teeth 20, 19, adapted to be engaged by pawls mounted on a member 13 keyed to the axle and on a member 15 coupled to a sleeve 10 respectively. The sleeve 10 is driven from the wheel 2 through dogs 8. External teeth 22 on the primary gear member permanently mesh with teeth 23 on a gear member 24 mounted on a countershaft 25. A sliding clutch member 27 permanently engages teeth 26 on the member 24 and can be moved in or out of engagement with the teeth 28 of a gear member 29 that meshes with a pinion upon a second countershaft. The second countershaft carries a bevel gear 33 gearing with a bevel pinion 34 on the shaft driving the cutter.
