[Class 80 (iii).] In cam mechanism for the fuel pumps of internal - combustion engines or for other purposes, a sliding member 1 is introduced between the cam 2 and the tappet to be reciprocated by the cam, and is carried by a support which is rotated concentrically or r eccentrically about the cam, for example in the opposite direction to, and at half the speed of, the cam. The member 1 may be driven by epicyclic gearing. Fig. 9 shows the cam 2 carried by an arm 8 extending from a crank 6 on the driving-shaft 5, the member 1 being mounted in a guide 3 connected to a planet wheel, which is loose on the crank 6 and rolls within an internally toothed member 7. The member 7 may be adjusted angularly to vary the timing. Fig. 12 shows cam mechanism for actuating the fuel pumps of a nine-cylinder engine. Four members 1 are arranged round the cam 2 and driven in the opposite direction at one-eighth of the speed of the cam. The members 1 act on tappets 4, 14 connected to the pumps, and are carried by a guide 3, 3a formed with internal teeth 16 gearing with a pinion 17. This pinion is carried on a loosely mounted member 19 and is connected to a second wheel 17a gearing with a pinion 21 on the main shaft 5. Further cams 23 may be proyided on the part 3a for actuating tappets 24. Cams 22 may be arranged round the members 1 so as to return them positively as they ride off the cam 2. The cam 2 may be adjusted angularly by means of a lever 11 sliding the cam over helical inclines on the shaft 5. The members 19, 21, 22 may also be adjusted angularly.
