318,613. Soc. Nouvelle des Usines de la ChaleassiÞre. Sept. 8, 1928, [Conven. tion date]. Actuating by eccentrics and toothed gearing; timing-devices.-In a heavy-oil engine eccentrics for actuating the fuel pumps and cams for actuating the compreesed-air starting valves are mounted on the same auxiliary shaft, which is driven from the engine shaft through gearing which allows the angular relationship of the shafts to be adjusted for reversing or regulating the engine. In one form, Fig. 4, the shaft 10 carrying the eccentrics and cams is driven from the engine shaft 1 through gearing 2, 7, 8, 3, 9, the gear 3 being loose on the shaft 1 and the gears 7, 8 being fixed on a shaft 6 rotatable freely in bearings which can be adjusted about the shaft 1 by means of a lever 5, a worm and toothed sector, or other means. In a modification, Fig. 5, the cam &c. shaft 19 is driven from the engine shaft 11 through a bevel gear 12, bevel gears 15 rotatable freely on a shaft 14 adjustable about the axis of the shaft 11, a freely rotatable bevel wheel 13 integral with a gear 17, and a gear 18 on the shaft 19.
