Abstract

210,384. Newton, E. R. Jan. 27, 1923, [Convention date]. Addition to 159,184. Motor power plant.-In a power plant comprising a reciprocating four-stroke-cycle internalcombustion engine 10 the exhaust from which passes at a pressure substantially above atmospheric pressure to a secondary expansion apparatus such as a turbine 11 or a hot-air engine, means are provided for charging the internal-combustion engine and driving out or scavenging the residual exhaust gas to said secondary expansion apparatus with precompressed air at a presure substantially above atmospheric pressure. The precompressed air may be supplied to the engine and pass to the turbine during the suction stroke up to such a point that, on compression in the engine cylinders, the predetermined compression is reached ; the air may be supplied to the engine and pass to the turbine for the whole of the suction stroke and up to a point on the compression stroke such that the predetermined compression is reached. The entire power of the internal-combustion engine may be taken up in driving the compressor 15. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also a two-stroke cycle engine charged and scavenged by precompressed air with the main and residual exhaust gas passing to a secondary expansion apparatus. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
