Abstract

245,151. B³chi, A. Dec. 24, 1924, [Convention date]. Motor power plant.-In a four-stroke internalcombustion engine 48, charged by a pre-compressor 40, Fig. 5, before, the end of the expansion stroke a valve 51 admits exhaust gases by way of a conduit 49 and nozzles 52 to a turbine I, and during the exhaust stroke of the engine the valve 51 is closed and a valve 44 admits the remaining exhaust gases through a conduit 53 to a lower-pressure turbine II receiving also the exhaust from the turbine I. The turbine I, II may be independent, or inter-geared with the engine, and may drive the compressor 40 and an electric generator 60. Fig. 6 shows the application of the invention to a two-stroke engine, the turbine I being supplied with exhaust gases from a pipe 49 and valve 51, and the turbine II with exhaust gases which are scavenged through ports 44 and a pipe 53 by the pre-compressed charge or air admitted through a pipe 42 and ports 47. In another two-stroke engine, Fig. 7, the compressed charge is introduced through a row of ports 47 and an upper row of ports 47<a> controlled by a valve 47<b>. On the downward movement of the piston a valve 51 opens and admits exhaust gases to the pipe 49 and turbine I. Then the pre-compressed charge entering the cylinder through ports 47 scavenges the exhaust gases through ports 44 and a conduit 53 to the turbine II. Finally the valve 47<b> opens, admitting a fresh charge also through the upper ports 47<a>. Scavenging into both turbines I, II may be employed. At certain loads the exhaust gases may be led to the turbine II only. With multi-cylinder engines, separate conduits lead from each cylinder to the turbine I.
