Abstract

3728. Hudlass, F. W. Feb. 12. Cylinders, pipes for.- A device for supplying air to the induction pipe of a petrol or gas engine comprises a cylinder 1 having a ring of ports 7 controlled by the lower edge of a screw cap 2, and containing a piston 5 having a corresponding ring of ports 8. The cap is secured by a spring tongue engaging one of a series of numbered notches in its edge. The piston is supported by a light spring 6, so that when the engine is at rest or turning slowly with strong suction, as at starting, the piston is at one of its terminal positions and the charge is not diluted, but when running at high speed, the piston takes up an intermediate position as shown and air passes into the induction pipe. The screw movement may be effected by a stud on the top of the cylinder 1 engaging with a screwed orifice in the cap 2 and secured by a lock-nut.
