Abstract

137,527. Le Grain, R. L. G. Nov. 12, 1917, [Convention date]. Spray carburettors; vaporizers, external. - Heavy fuels such as petroleum are vaporized and mixed with air in apparatus comprising a sprayer 3, the fuel from which together with air entering at 6 pass through exhaust heated chambers 10, 12 separated by ribs 11 to an outlet pipe 13 whence the mixture diluted with cold air entering at 16 passes through a Venturi tube 14 to the engine. The sprayer orifice is below the level of the fuel in the float chamber 1. During slow running, fuel with very little air is drawn up a tube 21, through a heated coil 22 and pipe 23, and is mixed with hot air from a pipe 25 before entering an expansion chamber 24, whence it passes to the induction pipe on the engine side of the throttle valve 17. The chambers 14, 12, the coil 22 and pipe 25, are heated by exhaust gases entering the pipe 19 passing through space 18 and leaving at 20. The expansion chamber 24 may be provided with a throttle valve which is opened for slow running to a certain extent and then remains stationary, after which the main throttle is opened.
