Abstract

216,830. Hartsough, R. B. May 28, 1923, [Convention date]. Vaporizers, external; spray carburettors.-Fuel, and particularly heavy fuel, is drawn into a chamber and distributed in a thin film or sheet over the wall thereof to be taken up by air drawn into the chamber and the resulting mixture is passed through an exhaust-heated vaporizer. The chamber 2 is supplied with air through a pipe 9 with manually and suction actuated valves 8, 6 and has a throttle valve 10 actuated through a rod 12 or by a governor at the end 14 of its spindle 11. Fuel is delivered tangentially to the chamber 2 just below the. throat of a Venturi portion 4 thereof, by a nozzle 29, Fig. 5, fed through a passage 28 from near the bottom of a float chamber 16. The cover 18 is screwed into the chamber 16 and carries a depending tubular part 19 which serves as a guide fot lugs 27 on the valve 26 carried by the float 25. The downward movement of the float is limited by lugs 33, Fig. 5, and a drain cock 17 is provided. The passage 28 is formed, within the float chamber by a projecting piece 34. The mixture from the chamber 2 passes through the vaporizing chambers 2a to the cylinder inlets 3. The chambers 2<a> are in the form of a cross, Fig. 6, to expose a large heating surface, are grooved longitudinally and are surrounded by exhaust gases in the chamber 34 which is in communication with the cylinder exhaust outlets 35, Fig. 3, and with a discharge passage 37. In cold weather the heavy fuel may be drained from the float chamber 16 and a primary charge of light fuel introduced through an opening 43. The vaporizer is secured by bolts 41 through holes 40.
