Abstract

137,533. Le Grain, R. L. G. Nov. 11, 1918, [Convention date]. Addition to 137,527. Spray carburettors; vaporizers, external.-The parent Specification describes a carburettor for use with heavy fuels, in which heated carburetted air is delivered into the main suction pipe and mixed therein with cold atmospheric air, a pipe being provided for slow running, the said pipe including an expansion chamber into which hot air and heated rich mixture are drawn through separate. pipes and delivered to the suction pipe on the engine side of the throttle valve. The invention, which is directed more particularly to running for long periods at low power, e.g. in marine engines, consists in providing, in addition to the main suction pipe 12 which is connected to the induction pipe 13, a supplementary suction pipe 16, the air supply to which is drawn through a pipe 17 heated by exhaust gases flowing through the chamber 9. The pipes 12, 16 are provided with throttle valves 14, 19. The fuel to each suction passage together with a small quantity of air, admitted near the nozzles, is supplied by sprayers 4, 3, 2 of decreasing size. The rich mixture passes through heated pipes 8, 7, 6 to the suction-passages 12, 16 and to the engine side of the throttle 19 respectively. The pipe 6 may draw hot air from the pipe 17 through a valved connexion 21, and cold air may be admitted to pipe 17 to vary the temperature of the mixture. At starting, both the throttles 14, 19 are closed and the pipe 6 may be heated or a light fuel such as petrol supplied therethrough. After starting, the throttle valve 19 is opened and running at low powers is carried on by the supplementary pipe 16. For full power runnir.g the throttle 14 is opened.
