Abstract

A torsional vibration damper, for a motor vehicle main clutch, comprises a hub element 11 coupled to a first damping mass 13 by slipping clutch 12 having a release arrangement 34 which partially disengages or slips the clutch 12 when peak torques occur. Hub element 11 is clamped, via disc springs 32, 33, between clamping rings 28, 29 which have lever sections 30, 31 that cooperate with slanting surfaces 36 on release arrangement 34 when it moves under an influence of the peak torque. The slanting surfaces 36, via lever sections 30, 31, alters the clamping position of the rings 28, 29 from radius R1 to a possible minimum radius R2 so that torque transferred through element 11 is reduced, thereby slipping the clutch 12 and allowing relative rotation of the first damping mass 13 and second damping mass 22. In other embodiments the release arrangement may comprises ball and indentation/ramp means (see fig 9 to 13b and figs 20 to 21a) or swivelling sensor arrangement (see figs 14 to 15b) or catch means (see figs 16 to 19). Also the main clutch may be slipped to absorb the peak torques (see figs 16 to 20).
