Abstract

940,011. Friction clutches. J. WALTERSCHEID, and B. WALTERSCHEID-MULLER. -June 12, 1962 [Sept. 26, 1961], No. 22623/62. Heading F2C. In a slipping clutch the friction disc 2 is engaged by a pressure plate 3 loaded by a prestressed dished spring ring 6 having a " negative " or " dropping " load characteristic over its operating range, balls 9 being mounted between camming recesses in rings 19, 20 engaging the inner periphery of the spring 6 and an outer plate 21 respectively, the spring characteristic and form of camming recess being so chosen as to give a substantially constant torque under slip. In addition an auxiliary spring ring 24 is provided, having its inner edge secured to the plate 21 and its outer edge engaged by nuts 26 on bolts 23 passing through the pressure plate 3, adjustment of the nuts varying the force exerted by the spring 24 on the plate 3 to compensate for variation of pressure between the clutch discs due to wear. The auxiliary ring 24 may be replaced by a series of axially disposed helical springs, Fig. 3 (not shown). Release levers 14 are operated by collars 11, 15.
