JOHN ROGERS FLANNERY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA; ASSIGNOR T0 FLANNERY BOLT COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
STAY-BOLT FOR BOILERS.
. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patentedflct. 15, 1918.
Application filed February 21 1917. Serial No. 150,207.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. F LANNERY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay-Bolts for Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolts for boilers and more particularly to such as are knownin the art as flexible staybolts and have tell-tale holes.
In the manufacture of staybolts, it is desirable to provide a tell-tale hole which will extend through the body of the bolt so that should the bolt become ruptured at any point between the boiler plates, water or steam may enter said tell-tale hole and thus indicate the ruptured condition of the bolt. When using a tubular bar'in which the bore extends entirely through the same from end to end, and forming a head on the end thereof by forging or upsetting, the bore is liable to become contracted or closed for a prohibitive distance inwardly from the head.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and efficient staybolt structure having. its body portion made from a tubular bar, and to so apply a spherical or partly spherical head to the outer end of said tubular bar or bolt body, that the continuity of the bore which forms the tell-tale hole will not be disturbed and so that said tell-tale hole shall. extend from the inner end of the bolt into the headed end and be closed within the head.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; .Figure 1 is a sectional view of a staybolt showing an embodiment of the invention, with the head of the spherical type, a part of said head being shown in its finished state and the other part representing the blank before the head is finished; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a partly spherical head having an angular extension to receive a wrench, only one half of the head being shown in its finished state, and Fig. 3 is a view of a modification.
1 represents the body of the bolt, which may consist of a tubular bar of iron having its bore 2 extending from end to end thereof. At its outer end, the body 1 is somewhat contracted to form a neck 3 and an annular shoulder 4 at the inner end of said neck. The neck 3 is formed between its ends with a circumferential groove 5.
A blank 6 to form a head is made with a socket 7 to receive the neck 3 on the end of the body 1 of the bolt, said socket being of such depth that the inner end of the head will rest on the annular shoulder 4. \Vhen the blank for the head shall have been applied, it may be forged in suitable dies so as to cause the metal of the blank to enter the circumferential groove 5 in the neck 3, and the head shaped, as shown at the right hand lower side of Fig. 1. After the head shall have been thus applied, it may be electrically welded to the neck 3.
In the form shown in Fig. 2, the head 7- will be applied in the same way, but this head is made partly spherical and formed with an angular head 8 to receive a wrench.
With the construction shown in both Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, it will be observed that, the tell-tale bore or hole 2, extends from the inner end of the bolt to the outer headed end thereof; that said bore is continuous from one end to the other of the body of the bolt, and that the outer end of said tell-tale is closed by and within the head on the outer end of the bolt.
If desired the separate head may be made I with a hole 9, permanently closed by a plug 10.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is r 1. A staybolt comprising a tubular body portion having its bore extending from end to end thereof and forming a tell-tale hole, said body portion. having an integral neck at its outer end'provided between its ends with a groove, and a separate head secured on said neck and having portions of its metal enteringsaid groove, said head closing the outer end of the tell-tale hole.
2. A staybolt comprising a tubular body portion having its bore extending from end to end thereof, and forming a tell-tale hole,
with a. groove, and a seperatehead secured specification in the presence of tWo subscribon sand neck and havmg portlonsof its metal 111g wltnesses.
entering said groove said head closing the s w outer end o f the telf-tale hole at the'outer JOHN ROGERS FLANNIURY 5 end of the neck onthe body portion of the Witnesses: t bolt. 1 ETHAN I. Down,
In testimony whereof, I have signed this F. H. ALLISON.
