Abstract

La presente invención se refiere a un proceso de semilla para manufacturar partículas de copolímero ligadas de intercambio de iones capaces de resistir presiones de inflado sin fracturarse después de una funcionalización que comprende: (a) formando una suspensión agitada acuosa de partículas semilla ligeramente ligadas estirénicas o etilénicas en la ausencia de una cantidad de coloides poliméricos protectores que prevendrían la imbibición de monómeros a las partículas semillas; (b) alimentación a las dichas partículas de semilla suspendidas bajo condiciones de polimerización una mezcla de monómero o monómero que comprende (I) 0 a 98 por ciento por peso del dicho monómero o mezcla de monómero de al menos un monómero monoetilénicamente insaturado estirénico o etilénico y (II) 2-100 por ciento por peso del dicho monómero o mezcla de monómero de al menos un monómero polietilénicamente insaturado estirénico o etilénico, mientras se balancean las condiciones de la suspensión, la velocidad de la alimentación, la agitación y el grado de polimerización para evitar la aglomeración de partículas y producir el dicho copolímero de partículas de intercambio de iones hasta que las partículas semilla se hayan inflado al tamaño deseado por imbibición del monómero o mezcla de monómero; (c) continuando la polimerización de las partículas semilla infladas hasta que resulte el dicho copolímero de partículas de intercambio de iones; y (d) separando el dicho copolímero de partículas de intercambio de iones del medio de suspensión acuosa.
