Abstract
Description
【0001 】
J. Appl. Phys.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a method for fixing carbon nanotubes used in field emission emitters and the like used for field emission displays and the like.
[0002]
[Prior art]
A carbon nanotube is an extremely minute tubular material in which one or a plurality of cylinders in which a graphite-like carbon atomic surface having a thickness of several atomic layers is rounded into a tube shape are nested.
Since such carbon nanotubes have a unique shape such as a large aspect ratio (length / diameter ratio) and a hollow shape, they are expected to be industrially applied as new carbon materials.
[0003]
Such a carbon nanotube can be obtained, for example, by arc discharge using a carbon rod as an electrode. This carbon nanotube fixing method is described in, for example, Nature Vol. 354 (1991) p.56-58.
The method of producing carbon nanotubes by arc discharge is to perform arc discharge using a carbon rod electrode to which iron, cobalt or nickel is added as a catalytic metal in an atmosphere of helium or argon gas and about 7.0 × 10E4 Pa. Is a method of generating
In such a method for producing carbon nanotubes by arc discharge, it is known that the place where the carbon nanotubes are produced differs depending on the type of the catalyst metal. For example, when iron and cobalt are added as catalytic metals, they are produced in the soot attached to the inner wall of the generator (chamber), and when nickel is added, they are produced in the soot attached to the surface of the cathode electrode. .
[0004]
In recent years, attempts have been made to apply the carbon nanotubes thus generated to an electron source. For example, Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. 37, L346, 1998 reports that carbon nanotubes were incorporated as an electron source of an electron tube and the resulting light emission was confirmed. Tech. Digest of SID99 reports that carbon nanotubes have been applied as an electron source for flat panels.
However, when the carbon nanotubes generated as described above are to be applied to an electron source (emitter), it is necessary to fix the cage-like carbon nanotubes on the substrate.
[0005]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
As a method for fixing carbon nanotubes, for example, JP-A-62-252056 discloses a method in which carbon nanotubes are dispersed in a resist and coated on a substrate. Further, in this method, when the film thickness is required to be uniform, spin coating is used, and then the carbon nanotubes are fixed on the substrate by applying necessary pre-baking to the resist.
However, in such a method, in order to form a carbon nanotube film having a large area, spin coating is required. However, since the specific gravity of the carbon nanotube and the resist is different, the carbon nanotube has a size of 1 μm or more. Since it tends to be hardened, there has been a problem that the distribution of the carbon nanotubes in the coated carbon nanotube film becomes non-uniform and the content density becomes low.
[0006]
Also, Tech. Digest of SID99 reports a method (slurry method) in which carbon nanotubes are dispersed in isopropyl alcohol (IPA), pulverized, mixed with an organic fixing agent, and applied.
However, in such a method, since the carbon nanotube is mixed with the organic fixing agent, there is a problem that the density of the carbon nanotube in the carbon nanotube film formed on the substrate is lowered. Further, in this method, the slurry is poured while being tilted and rotated at a low speed, spread and applied to the entire surface, and then the substrate is rotated at a high speed to remove excess slurry by centrifugal force. When the substrate is rotated at a high speed, there is a problem that the distribution of the carbon nanotubes becomes uneven or the density of the carbon nanotubes becomes low.
As described above, when the distribution of the carbon nanotubes becomes non-uniform or the density becomes low, there arises a problem that the electron emission of the formed emitter becomes non-uniform, the emission current becomes small, and the current density becomes low.
[0007]
Further, as another method for fixing the carbon nanotubes on the substrate, there is a screen printing method in which the carbon nanotubes are added to a fixing agent and a solvent and applied onto the substrate. However, in this method, the produced nanotubes are entangled and become solid when applied. In addition, even when carbon nanotubes are divided and applied on a substrate in this method, the carbon nanotubes aggregate in a fixing agent and a solvent before application due to van der Waals force or electrostatic force, or after application on a substrate. When the carbon nanotubes agglomerate in the fixing agent and the solvent until the solvent is volatilized and are baked to form a carbon nanotube film, irregularities of 1 micron or more are formed on the surface. As a result, the carbon nanotube film is used as an emitter. Emissions are non-uniform. In addition, when the content of the solvent is large, when the solvent is volatilized, the fixing agent cracks and unevenness is generated on the surface, and the distribution of the carbon nanotubes becomes uneven. In such a case, the emission current distribution on the carbon nanotube film is not uniform.
[0008]
The present invention has been made in order to solve the above-mentioned problem, and a carbon nanotube fixing method capable of fixing a carbon nanotube on a substrate with a large area and capable of uniformly dispersing the carbon nanotube at a high density. The purpose is to obtain.
[0009]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to solve the above problems, the present invention provides:
(A) forming a carbon nanotube film on a jig having a flat surface;
(B) forming an adhesive layer on the carbon nanotube film for fixing the carbon nanotube on the substrate;
(C) transferring the carbon nanotube film and the adhesive layer formed on the jig onto the substrate;
(D) providing a carbon nanotube fixing method comprising the step of removing the jig.
[0010]
In addition, the method of fixing the carbon nanotube of the present invention,
(A) forming a carbon nanotube film on a jig having a flat surface;
(E) forming an adhesive layer on the substrate for fixing the carbon nanotubes on the substrate;
(F) transferring the carbon nanotube film formed on the jig onto the adhesive layer on the substrate;
(D) removing the jig.
[0011]
In the carbon nanotube fixing method, the jig is preferably a filter paper or a filter.
The step (a) is to form a carbon nanotube film on the jig by dispersing the carbon nanotubes in a solvent to obtain a dispersion, and subjecting the dispersion to suction filtration or pressure filtration. Is preferred.
In the carbon nanotube fixing method of the present invention, it is desirable that the solvent is an alcohol such as ethyl alcohol or an organic solvent such as acetone.
Moreover, when using the said solvent, it is desirable to apply an ultrasonic wave to the dispersion liquid of a carbon nanotube and a solvent, and to disperse | distribute a carbon nanotube in a solvent.
Moreover, in the carbon nanotube fixing method of the present invention, it is desirable to include a step of making carbon nanotubes fine before the step (a).
Moreover, it is desirable that the fixing agent layer is a cellulose-based fixing agent such as nitrocellulose or methylcellulose.

A conventional method for fixing carbon nanotubes is to apply and fix a solution of carbon nanotubes, a fixing agent and a solvent on a substrate. Therefore, at this time, the liquid coating material vaporizes the solvent and becomes solid, but since the emission surface of the carbon nanotube film faces the atmosphere, the uneven distribution and unevenness of the carbon nanotubes in the liquid are liquid. When acting on the surface and becoming solid, the surface of the lower carbon nanotube film becomes uneven.
