Abstract

985,792. Roller conveyers. FISHER & LUDLOW Ltd. Feb. 1, 1963 [Feb. 10, 1962; Jan. 19, 1963], Nos. 5189/62 and 2446/63. Heading B8A. Each roller of a gravity rollerway comprises a shell 23 closed at each end by a hub member 24 provided with a stainless steel stub shaft 27 which rotates within a plain bearing in the form of a nylon ball 29. The shell 23 may be of metal or of semi-rigid plastic, e.g. P.V.C. The rollers are supported by a pair of stringers 10 having a flange 12 with a C-shaped bead groove 14 which receives spacer strips 16 formed of nylon or other semi-rigid plastic. Elements for supporting the rollers are mounted at intervals along the stringers and consist of a cup-like member 19 with an anchorage portion 20 for accommodation within the stringer groove. The 220 supporting members 19 are located against movement along the associated stringer by the strips 16 which are themselves retained within the groove by ears 21 formed on each supporting member 19. The balls have limited pivotal movement within the supporting members and permit free rotation of the shafts 27 even when the shafts of a roller are out of alignment due to manufacturing or assembly tolerances or when the roller shells 23 flex under load. In a modification, Fig. 5, the vertical flange 12 of each of the stringers is of plain configuration and each roller supporting element comprises an anchorage portion of inverted channel configuration. The supporting elements are secured to the stringers by screws 34 or other fastenings. Location spigots on the supporting elements may replace the screws &c.
