Abstract

A process for the preparation of a resin syrup, suitable for the production of laminates, comprises heating together in aqueous solution melamine, dicyandiamide and formaldehyde in the molar ratio of one mole of melamine to 0,02-0,35 mole of dicyandiamide and 0,6-1,2 moles of formaldehyde per primary amino equivalent of the melamine-dicyandiamide mixture at a pH between 8,0 and 9,0, the quantities of the initial reactants being so selected or the concentration so adjusted, that the solution contains 40%-65% by weight of the resin formed, continuing the condensation until a test portion of the solution containing 40%-65% by weight of resin, on being mixed with 0,5-2 volumes of water at 25 DEG C., gives a precipitate of the resin, cooling the solution to stop the condensation and adjusting the pH of the resulting solution to between 9 and 9,5. The syrups can be modified by introducing into the reaction charge plasticizers such as arylsulphonamides or by incorporation of 1%-10% by weight of polyhydric alcohols as described in Specification 809,662. In some cases isopropyl alcohol is also added.
