Abstract

A process for preparing a resin syrup comprises heating melamine and dicyandiamide with an aqueous solution of formaldehyde and methanol having a pH within the range 6,5 to 10, at a temperature between 70 DEG C. and the reflux temperature of the reactants, to a desired degree of condensation beyond the 25 DEG C. cloud point and then cooling the mixture. The molar ratio of melamine to dicyandiamide is from 1:1 to 5:1; that of formaldehyde to melamine and dicyandiamide together is from 2:1 to 4:1; and that of methanol to formaldehyde is from 1:3 to 2:1. In an example methanol (12,5 moles), formalin (containing 12 moles of formaldehyde were brought to pH 7,5 by means of sodium hydroxide and heated to 75 DEG C.; melamine (3,2 moles) and dicyandiamide (0,8 moles) were added. The mixture was heated for 45 minutes beyond the 25 DEG C. cloud point and was then concentrated under vacuum to yield a storable syrup.
