Abstract

An injectable iron preparation is obtained by the reaction of an iron salt such as ferric chloride or ferric nitrate or of ferric oxychloride or of dialysed iron with a synthetic polysaccharide such as polyglucose or polygalactose in an alkaline medium. The ratio of the weight of the polysaccharde to the weight of iron is preferably from 10-20 : 1. The polysaccharide may be obtained by heating glucose or galactose with an acid catalyst until the resulting polysaccharide possesses only 5% and 1% respectively of the reducing value of the original sugar. It is then dissolved in water and the iron salt or dialysed iron added and then sufficient caustic soda solution added to produce a pH of about 11, and then the mixture heated to 100 DEG C. for about two hours. It is then cooled and methanol, ethanol, or acetone added and the precipitate removed. The injectable solution may contain 5- 1/4 % of iron.ALSO:An injectable iron preparation is obtained by the reaction of an iron salt such as ferric chloride or ferric nitrate or of ferric oxychloride or of dialysed iron with a synthetic polysaccharide such as polyglucose or polygalactose in an alkaline medium.
