Abstract
1,164,348. Preparation of aminopolyacetonitriles. W. R. GRACE & CO. 11 Aug., 1967 [15 Aug., 1966], No. 37085/67. Heading C2C. Aminopolyacetonitriles are obtained by a process which comprises the steps in sequence of (1) forming a reaction mixture at or below ambient temperature comprising an aqueous solution of hydrogen cyanide, formaldehyde or a compound capable of liberating formaldehyde, and a primary or secondary amine or a compound capable of liberating such an amine, or of hydrogen cyanide, a compound capable of liberating both formaldehyde and a primary or secondary amine, and if stoichiometrically required, formaldehyde, and (2) heating the reaction mixture in the presence of an acid catalyst to a temperature of not less than 60‹ C. The process may be effected either batchwise or continuously, suitably at a temperature of 100- 200‹ C., and an autogenous pressure (e.g. 1.1 to 10 atmospheres) sufficient to maintain the reactants in the liquid phase is preferably maintained. The acid catalyst may be an aqueous solution of a mineral or organic acid, e.g. sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, acetic acid or p-toluene-sulphonic acid, or the catalyst may comprise an acidic ion-exchange resin which is preferably synthetic. Specific examples relate to the preparation of nitrilotriacetonitrile from a reaction mixture comprising hexamethylenetetramine, formaldehyde, hydrogen cyanide, sulphuric acid and water.
