Abstract
A stable composition of formaldehyde is obtained by contacting formaldehyde in substantially gaseous and monomeric form at 80-400 DEG C. with a chemically active acceptor comprising urea, melamine, thiourea, phenol or a monoor dialkyl substituted phenol, the acceptor being a liquid or in suspension or solution, in the presence of at least a catalylic amount of water, the formaldehyde and acceptor dispersion being maintained at a pH in the range 3,5-5.5 and at a temperature between 50 DEG C. and the boiling temperature of the dispersion. The products are used in the preparation of condensation resins based on the acceptor used.ALSO:A stable composition of formaldehyde is obtained by contacting formaldehyde is substantially gaseous and monomeric form at 80-400 DEG C. with an acceptor comprising urea, melamine, thiourea, phenol or a mono-or dialkyl substituted phenol, the acceptor being a liquid or in suspension or solution, in the presence of at least a catalytic amount of water, the formaldehyde and acceptor dispersion being maintained at a pH in the range 3,5-5,5 and at a temperature between 50 DEG C. and the boiling temperature of the dispersion. Advantageously the formaldehyde may be used directly from a dehydrogenation or oxidation unit in which it is being made from methanol. To obtain the correct pH value an alkali, such as sodium or potassium hydroxide, triethanolamine, borax or sodium carbonate is added to the mixture.
