Abstract

854,065. Magnetic clutches and brakes. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND) Ltd., S. Jan. 18, 1957 [Jan. 18, 1956], No. 1742/56. Class 35. A magnetic powder clutch or brake comprises an inner annular driven member of U-shaped cross-section and an outer driving member which carries an exciting winding disposed within the channel of the driven member. In the double unit shown, one unit comprises a driven member in two parts 12 and 13, secured together and to a stub shaft 10 and hollow shaft 8 to which the driven shaft 7 is splined. The driving member comprises a cylindrical housing 3 secured to side plates 5 and 24, and to a flange 6 on the driving-shaft. Two annular plates 15 project from the housing 3 into the channel 14, the exciting coil being disposed between them in bonding material 17 which also holds ring 19 between the arms of an annulus of U-section 18 to form a powder trap. Further traps are formed by the'projections 22 and 25 on the sideplates. and also by annular permanent magnets 23 and 29 on the driving member which .cooperate with adjacent portions of the driven member to form magnetic traps. Specification 649,553 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 779,432.
