Abstract

689,138. Magnetic fluid clutches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 18, 1951 [Jan. 28,1950], No. 1401/51. Class 80 (ii). A stationary winding 11 provides flux to solidify a magnetic fluid 6a, comprising iron particles suspended in oil, to cause it to transmit a friction drive from an enclosing non- magnetic (e.g. Nylon, or brass) driving casing 6, to an inner driven disc 8, the flux-path including a U-sectioned annular fixed magnet-core 3 and facing rings 12, 13, of magnetic material, inset in the driving casing 6. A duplicated arrangement, with planetgears, may be used for reversing, e.g. as in Specification 675,645. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 649,553.
