Abstract

733,265. Electromagnetic clutches and brakes. EATON MANUFACTURING CO. May 15, 1953 [June 4, 1952], No. 13653/53. Class 35. An electromagnetic clutch, brake, &c. comprises a field member carrying an annular coil 37 flanked by substantially flat rings 35 of magnetic material and an iron drum 7 surrounding the field member from which it is separated by an air gap containing iron dust or other magnetic powder in graphite or in oil, grease, &c. The Specification describes various ways of constructing the field coil flanking core, e.g. it may be washers with flanged outer edges or flat washers of different outside diameter or a combination of these, so that in each case annular peripheral grooves are formed in the wall of the core facing the air gap. In Fig. 1, the pole assembly 27 is constituted by washers 31, 33 and flanged washers 35 and the entire group of washers is riveted at spaced intervals by rivets 39. This pole assembly 27 is welded to a hub 25 which is carried by a driving-shaft 1. Alternatively, as shown in Fig; 8, spiral iron sheets 107 keyed to the shaft may be substituted for the hub 25 and washers 31, 35. The drum 7 has end plates 9 so as to form a casing 5, and studs 23 are fixed to the latter which are either connected to a driven part or to a stationary part if the device is to act as a brake. Specifications 649,553, [Group XXXIV], and 677,534 are referred to.
