Abstract

783,770. Rotary pumps. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Aug. 23, 1956 [Sept. 19, 1955], No. 25769/56. Class 110 (2). A rotary liquid pump 10 is provided with a leak-off point 42, on the discharge side, a by-pass valve 44, which opens at a predetermined pressure in the discharge chamber 34, and a restriction 52 in the by-pass back to the suction chamber 32. The restriction 52 leads to an enlargement 54, where velocity energy is converted to pressure and prevents cavitation in the suction chamber. A rotor 14 is driven by a shaft 16, and outwardly-sliding vanes 20 are forced outwards by centrifugal force and liquid under delivery pressure in the slots 30. Inlet and delivery ports 26, 28 are provided. A reservoir 12 has a slot 74 through which a supply of liquid flows to the chamber 32, to make up that lost through the passage 42. A filter 103, Fig. 3 (not shown) is included in the delivery line from the pump.
