Abstract

574,359. Rotary pumps. COLBERT, J. H. May 12, 1943, No. 7591. [Class 110 (ii)] An outwardly-sliding vane pump has a stator 22, which is pivoted on the delivery chamber 24, to vary the eccentricity between the stator and rotor 18, and thus using the pump delivery. The delivery pressure acts on a plunger 37, and increase in pressure moves the stator to the left, Fig. 1, against the force of a spring 34 which acts through a rocking lever 11. The pump is supported by a mounting flange 2. The rotor is mounted on a shaft 6 in ball bearings 5, and the whole pump enclosed in a casing 1 having inlet and delivery ports 7, 8. Semi-circular holes 20 in the rotor are drilled at opposite sides of successive radial slots for the vanes 19, so as to give six vents to the right, and six vents to the left. Fluid under pressure thus forces the vanes radially outwards. The stator has side-sealing plates 23 also mounted on the pivot 24. Fluid is delivered through ports 27, 28 to the pivot 24. Each side plate 23 has a segment 29 cut away to provide communication between the inlet 7 and the pumping chamber. Stuffing boxes 30 are provided in the side plates 23. Pressure fluid passes from the delivery 24, through a port 41 and pipe 43 to a servo valve 13 which slides in a boss 12. The valve moves in a ported sleeve and controls the fluid supply to, or leak away from, the plunger 37. A spring counteracts the fluid pressure. To facilitate starting up the pump, the suction and delivery sides are connected by a valve 52, port 54 and passage 55. As the pump speeds up, fluid flowing through a restricted passage acts on the valve to close off the passage 55 by-passing the suction and delivery sides of the pump.
