Abstract

773,065. Variable-pitch propellers. HARTZELL INDUSTRIES, Inc. Nov. 14, 1955, No. 32532/55. Class 114. In an adjustable-pitch propeller in which one or more radially projecting blades are carried on a central hub and are rotatable about their axes between feathered and minimum pitch positions, the blades are continuously urged towards the feathered position by resilient means while fluid operable means are provided acting in opposition thereto to reduce the pitch of the blades. The outer end of the hub 10, to radial extensions of which the blades 24 are secured, carries a fixed cylinder 26 having its outer end closed by a member 28 formed with a sleeve 30 in which a tube 32 slides. At the inner end of the tube 32, a collar 34 engages one end of a spring 36 which abuts against the member 28 to urge the tube 32 inwards and through links 46 to increase the pitch of the blade 21. At its outer end the tube 32 carries a cylinder 40 sliding in fluid-tight manner on the cylinder 26. A pump 74, Fig. 5, supplies hydraulic liquid through the tube 32 to the cylinder 40 to decrease the blade pitch, the action being under control of a centrifugal speed governor 84 which actuates a control valve 78 in a cylinder 70. When it is desired to feather the blades with the propeller turning at speed, a manually operated cam 86 is turned to raise the valve 78 against the governor action and open the tube 32 to an exhaust passage 80 whereby the cylinder 40 empties quickly as the spring 36 turns the blades to the full feathered position. In this, the spring is assisted by counterweights 52 mounted on the member 22 which clamps the blade 24 to the hub 10. When the propeller slows down normally, movement to the feathering position is prevented by a spring-pressed plunger 56 normally held by centrifugal force out of notches or apertures in a plate 54 secured to the clamping member 22 but engaging therein to stop blade turning when the speed falls to 500-1000 R.P.M.
