[Also in Group XXIX] The drive and pitch of a variable-pitch marine propeller is controlled by a single lever 1, the operation of which positions a selection valve 5 controlling the pitch of the propeller ; controls the throttle of an I.C. engine driving the propeller ; and preloads the spring of a governor 14. Movement of the lever forward to 2A, 2 or 2B moves the selection valve 5 and changes the pitch range to make it positive, neutral or negative, the pitch being varied by the governor 14 to allow the engine speed to remain at a value predetermined by the loading on the governor. Hydraulic action on a piston 8 within the propeller arises from oil pumped from a reservoir 49 by a shaft-driven pump 6 through valves 13, 5 (or through valves 25, 5 for neutral pitch). Feathering of the blades is effected with the lever back opposite 2A by the running of a pump 59. Throttle control is produced by a link 20. When the valve 5 is moved to the neutral-pitch position, the governor is inoperative and the pitch is controlled through 42, 46, 48 and valve 25.
