Abstract
683,906. Variable-pitch propellers. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. March 21, 1950. [March 30, 1949] No. 6994/50. Class 114. A control device is formed as a self contained unit which is placed over a sleeve on the propeller shaft and held against rotation. The unit comprises an oil reservoir 84, containing a main pump 116, a scavange pump 162, both driven by the gear 120 rotating with the propeller shaft, and an auxiliary pump 104, driven by the electric motor 82 for feathering when the propeller is stationary. The inlet 124 to the pump is closed by the collar 128 so that oil can be pumped up pipe 134 in inverted flight. For normal constant speed operation fluid is led under the control of the governor valve 100 to passages 88, 94 which lead through annular parts in the sleeve 14 secured to the propeller shaft. Feathering and reversing is initiated by the hand operated switch 192 which selectively controls the solenoid operated valves 146, 148 to override the governor valve. Fluid from these valves also loads the pump pressure relief valve 96, thus increasing the effective pump pressure. Motion of the propeller blades is limited during feathering or reversing by contact segments 328, 330 on the blades, these operating holding solenoids 324, 326 and 344.
