Abstract
741,321. Lawn mowers. QUALCAST, Ltd. June 29, 1954 [April 1, 1953], No. 9053/53. Class 6 (2). A motor lawn-mower of the side-wheel type includes a platform 16 supported on the sideframes 3, 4 above but closely adjacent to the cutting cylinder 11 and having mounted upon it an assembly comprising an internal-combustion engine 19, a bearing 22 supporting a countershaft 24, an interruptible drive 28 between the engine and countershaft, a fuel tank 38 with its base on the platform and its top not higher than the induction port on the engine, a carburettor 30 of the direct-suction type mounted at or above the level of the inlet port of the engine and above the maximum fuel-level in the tank and a permanent driving connection 26 from the countershaft to the cutter cylinder. By providing a carburetter having no float-chamber, all the engine components may be juxtaposed upon the platform 16 which is carried on cross-bars 5, 6 uniting the side-frames. The engine crank-shaft carries a pulley 44 driving the countershaft, 24 through a belt 28. The countershaft bearing is carried by pivoted radius-arms 23 so as to be swingable through a push-rod 36 and pivoted bell-crank 29, to slacken or tighten the belt-drive 28. The cutter is driven by a chain 26 entrained around sprockets 25, 15 on the countershaft 24 and cutter axle. The axle drives the side wheels 2 through ratchets 14 and internally-toothed drums 9 on the wheels.
