Abstract
728,149. Typewriters. OLYMPIA WERKE WEST GES. July 3, 1952 [July 3, 1951; Sept. 29, 1951], No. 16743/52. Class 100 (4). Back-spacing mechanism; ; stroke adjustment.-A typewriter is provided with a device in addition to the conventional back-spacing key so that ligatures may be printed; the device comprises an additional key 4 pivotally mounted on the back-spacing key and effects a shorter back-spacing step. The amount of back-spacing may be controlled by a screw on an eccentric disc mounted on the key 4 or to coact therewith. To avoid a subsequent letter being typed too close to the ligature, the ligature key is coupled to the space-bar 12 so that when printing of the ligature is completed a letter-space is automatically effected. In machines where two different letter-spaces can be effected it is coupled to the larger. As shown in Fig. 5, the ligature key 4 when depressed causes a turnedout lug 10 thereon to engage a lever 13 that rotates a space-bar shaft 11 which through an intermediate lever 14 and link 15 engages the rocker 16 of the escapement mechanism which only when released effects the letter-spacing. The lever 13 is locked in the downward position by a notch 24 on a latch 20 and is not released until the end of the return movement of the ligature key when the end 23 thereof engages the upper end 22 of the latch pivoting it clockwise and releasing the lever 13 from the notch 24. The release of the lever 13 permits a letter-spacing movement.
