Letter-spacing mechanism.-A variable letterspace escapement mechanism for a typewriter comprises a rocker 41 moved each time a typebar swings to printing position, a fixed pawl 42 and a movable pawl 40 which is slidably mounted on the rocker and adapted to slide different distances according to the position of a cranked lever 46 having projecting stops 46d, 46e which engage a pin 45 on the movable pawl 40. With the lever 46 in position shown in Fig. 8, the pawl slides enough to effect a single letterspace, but if it is rocked clockwise due to a pull on a link 50, the pin 45 of the pawl 40 may slide from the notch 46e up to a stop-spring 52 to permit a double letter-space. The link 50 is pulled by an end part 51a, Fig. 1, of a lever 51 which is rocked by an actuator 20 pivoted to a shaft 19. The shaft 19 is rocked only when a double letter-space is required by an actuating bar 22 pivotally mounted in two supporting arms 21 fast on the shaft 19. A control lever 24 links the actuating bar 22 to the case-shift movement so that the edge of the bar is engaged by part 1c of the key levers 1 if a double letter space is required. Each key lever 1 is shaped, Fig. 2, according to the letter-spacing required in upper and lower case printing. To effect a single letter-spacing the lever 1 does not engage the bar 22. A space bar 57 may effect either a single letter-spacing by the pivoting of a bridge 61 which engages the rocker 41 or a double letterspacing by connecting the bridge 61 to the lever 51 by means of link 62. Carriage brakes.-When a tabulation key is depressed a push rod 53, Fig. 1, engages the movable pawl 40 at point 40c, Fig. 8, to free the carriage but also puts into operation a centrifugal brake 37 driven from a gear 35 attached to escapement wheel 34. Driving arrangements. -On. a carriage return movement the movable pawl 40 is moved out of engagement with the escapement wheel 34 by a projection on a disc 38 frictionally urged against the wheel 34.
