Abstract

1,142,936. Typewriters. OLYMPIA WERKE A.G. 20 April, 1966 [23 April, 1965], No. 17303/66. Heading B6F. Escapement mechanism.-A single pawl escapement mechanism which may be fitted to existing typewriters with fast and loose pawls mounted on a rocker; comprises a pawl. 5 pivoted at 6<SP>1</SP> on a lever 6 and biased by a spring 7 so it can pivot away from and slide in a tripping (leftward) direction relative to a ratchet wheel 4; and an actuator 10-operated by a release 12-having a projection 10<SP>1</SP> for engaging the upper surface of the end 511 of the pawl 5. The projection 10<SP>1</SP> and the end 5<SP>11</SP> have abutting surfaces so that should the release held in 12 be downward position the rotation of the ratchet wheel 4 in letter-space direction is limited to a partial e.g. half a letter-space, see Fig. 3, not shown. For a normal letter the pawl 5 is pivoted counter-clockwise by the actuator 10 which returns under spring action 11 when the release 12 returns to normal position. The tooth 5<SP>1</SP> of the pawl 5 engages the next tooth of the ratchet wheel 4 which moves the pawl to the right until arrested by the adjustable buffer 9. Silent-carriage-return mechanism.-A friction spring 13 disengages the pawl 5 by engagement with projection 5111 during carriage-return movement effected manually or by power.
