Escapement and repeat letter-spacing mechanism; letter-spacing key actions; multiple key actions.-Manually operated typewriter having an escapement mechanism comprising a star wheel 22, Fig. 1, which releases the carriage 12 in single letter-spacing increments through meshing spur wheel and rack 34, 36, respectively, when a rocker 42 is pivoted about a pin 27 to present alternately fixed and movable parts 40, 38 into engagement with teeth 30 (Fig. 2) on the star wheel 22 on depression of a spacing bar 28, by a first amount, is provided with an operator 14, which disables the rocker 42 and enables an anchor detent 16 to letterspace the carriage continuously in incremental steps until the spacing bar 28, which has been depressed by a second amount, has been released. Depression of the spacing bar 28 by a second larger amount pivots the rocket 42 by means of lever 60 into a position in which the fixed pawl 40 is displaced clockwise out of the operative range of the star wheel 22 and an extension 112 on a lever 110 mounted on the rocker 42 engages simultaneously the operator 14 to displace it towards a bracket 78 to dispose an anchor 16, having two detents 114, 116 (Fig. 2) in operative relationship with the teeth 30 of star' wheel 22. Escapement mechanism draw spring 15 causes the star wheel to rotate and cam the respective detents 114, 116 into and out of engagement with the teeth 30 of the star wheel 22, alternate engagement permitting the carriage to letter-space in incremental steps until the letter spacing bar 28 is released. Rate of movement of the carriage is controlled by a pendulum 18 having a vertically adjustable weight 20.
