Abstract

695,116. Fluid bearings. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. April 16, 1951 [May 15, 1950], No. 6544/50. Class 12 (i). In a fluid bearing of the kind in which fluid is fed continuously under pressure between supporting and supported bearing elements or pads, a supporting pad is formed at its bearing face with a central depression 11 which is entirely surrounded by an unsunk marginal portion 12 containing bores 13 through which pressure fluid is supplied from a supply line 14. The pressure gradient across the pad is indicated by the line 15. Additional bores 16, Fig. 3, may connect the depression 11 with the supply line 14. In another embodiment, a shaft 15, Fig. 5, is supported by three selfaligning bearing pads 52 on spherical mountings 54 on a cage 53. The pads are hollow and serve as reservoirs to which air under pressure is supplied through flexible pipes. The bearing faces have central depressions 11 and marginal portions 12 containing restricted bores (not shown) similar to the bores 13 in Figs. 1 and 3. In a further embodiment the bearing elements are of part spherical configuration.
