Abstract

880,997. Fluid bearings. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. March 28, 1958 [March 28, 1957], No. 10206/57. Class 12 (1). In a rectilinear-motion gas bearing comprising a body 1 having a plane lower surface separated from a pad 2 by a film of gas disposed in a clearance space h, gas under pressure is supplied through a central hole 4 and flows through the clearance space into an annular cavity 3, which communicates with the clearance space to form a pressure zone, from which it escapes through a restricted passage 20. Some gas also escapes through the clearance between the periphery of the pad 2 and the surface of the body 1. The arrangement of the cavity, restricted passage, and pressure zone is such that any periodic oscillation of the body 1 and pad 2 relative to each other sets up corresponding periodic gas pressure alternations in the pressure zone having a phase such that pressure maxima occur when the members are moving towards one another to decrease the clearance space. In a modification, gas flows into a cavity 3 through the clearance between the body 1 and annular surrounding margin of the cavity. In a further modification, gas is supplied through a restricted inlet 20, Fig. 8, to a cavity 3 communicating with the clearance space h through a hole 4. The space h is enlarged, as compared with the previous embodiments, which has the effect that the body 1 is attracted towards the pad 2 when gas under pressure is forced through the hole 4. In another embodiment, gas is supplied to a cavity 3, Fig. 10, through a pneumatic amplifier comprising a spring-pressed diaphragm 5, having a central aperture 10, which cooperates with a valve seating 6. The surfaces of the supported member and supporting pads need not necessarily be flat. Specification 797,528 is referred to.
