Abstract

548,363. Fluid bearings. CREWDSON, E., and GILKES & GORDON Ltd., G. April 23, 1941. No. 5249. [Class 12 (i)] A uniform cylindrical bearing, without grooves, cavities, or depressions, has very small orifices leading to a source of pressure fluid which is admitted to a fine clearance between the bearing and the shaft. An outer ring or housing 1 integral with a base 2 carries a bush 3 with an annular flange and a setscrew 1b. The bush has an annular groove 4 and a series of passages 4a, the groove 4 registering with a duct 5. The shaft carries a collar 6 having a shallow groove 6a to receive fluid leaking from the clearance between the bearing and the shaft or from supplementary passages leading to groove 4. Several grooves 4 may be provided, and they may be in the base 2 and not the bush 3. The fluid may consist of air, steam or combustion products.
