Abstract

883,820. Tilting pad bearings. BRISTOL SIDDELEY ENGINES Ltd. Feb. 29, 1960 [May 13, 1959], No. 16367/59. Class 12 (1). In a tilting-pad bearing the pads have at least one internal cavity 15 and have a convexly-curved outer surface for rocking-in-line contact with a respective chordwise flat 13 on an interior wall of the holder. The holder 11 and the pads are provided with intercommunicating ducts 17, 16 through which liquid lubricant from an external source can be supplied, through the cavities 15 of the pads, to respective axiallyextending outlets 18 in the operative surfaces of the pads. Each pad comprises two parts 12a, 12b, secured together so as to define the cavity 15, having branches 15a, Fig. 3, connected to the ducts 16. The cavity 15 diverges to a width which coincides with the length of the outlet 18 which is situated adjacent the leading end of the pad. The circumferential movement of each pad is limited by stops 14, held by the holder, which also supports thrust bearings 20 on bosses 19. The bearings A, B, Fig. 6, are mounted in a housing 21 having an axially-directed oil channel 35 which conveys oil from an inlet 35a to the bearing surfaces via ports 31 in the housing, annular grooves 32 in the holders 11, and the ducts 17, 16, &c. The seating 38, of the thrust bearings 20 are lubricated through ducts 39, 40 connected to the annular groove 32. Specification 883,819 is referred to.
