586,641. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. MARTIN, E. May 24, 1944, No. 10084. [Class 135] A variable-pitch propeller is controlled by a hydraulic servomotor wherein some of the liquid supplied to the system at a low pressure is passed through a booster pump and on to a pressure chamber in which the pressure is limited by a relief valve, the latter being loaded by a spring in conjunction with the pressure of the low pressure liquid, and means is provided for alternatively connecting one side of the pitch-changing motor to the pressure-boosted liquid and the other side to the low pressure liquid. Oil is drawn from a reservoir 32, Fig. 1, by the engine lubricating pump 30 and is supplied to a booster pump 44, to a relief valve 80 where it acts to assist the loading spring 82, Fig. 2, and through a passage 53 to a part in a control valve 56 which is actuated by an engine speed governor 58. The high pressure oil from the booster pump passes to a chamber 46 and to a second port in control valve 56. When the pressure in chamber 46 is excessive, it acts on a piston 88 and pushes the latter back against its loading means to open a port 90 and vent the excess pressure back to the inlet of the booster pump. Valve 56 controls the connection of the high and low pressure lines through conduits 62, 65, oil collector ring 64, passages 38 and 40, 66 to alternative sides of a piston motor 24 situated in the hub of the propeller drive shaft. The resultant longitudinal movement of the latter is translated as described in Specification 505,077 into a rotary movement which, through bevel gears 22, 20, alters the pitch of the propeller 18.
