Abstract
134,258. Salmon, P., and Smith, W. S. Aug. 30, 1918. Apparatus.-Relates to an automatic control for propellers of variable pitch. An oil or other fluid pump a is driven by an auxiliary propeller b and is adapted to force liquid through the passage h<2> into the space c' so as to move the piston d against the action of the spring g. The piston rod e is attached to the cross-head f, which is connected by links to the blades of the main propeller of an aeroplane. When the engine is started on the ground, the auxiliary propeller b remains stationary and the pump rotates on its spindle, a comparatively small amount of oil being pumped to the space c'. When the aeroplane moves forward, the air rotates the propeller b in the opposite direction to the main propeller, the boss of which carries the body of the apparatus. The delivery of the pump is increased and the piston d moves further to the left and regulates the pitch of the propeller blades. An independent or finer adjustment of the propeller may be made by hand. The valve i controls the flow through the ports k<2>, k<1> from one side of the piston to the other, and consequently the position of the piston. The valve i may be adjusted by a fork-and-sleeve device l operated by the pilot. The by-pass may also be automatically controlled by a centrifugal governor m, n.
