Abstract

687,028. Motor vehicle driving arrangements. GUYER, J. BUCHER-. Nov. 8, 1950 [Dec. 3, 1949], No. 27330/50. Class 79 (ii) In a two wheel walk-type tractor having each wheel mounted on a stub axle, the stub axles are driven through a single or two part lay shaft parallel therewith and connected with a differential gear, each stub axle being driven by the lay shaft through a driving pinion slidably mounted on the shaft, the pinions being coupled with either the sun and planet gears or the driving wheel of the differential gear by axial movement to the right or left of a neutral position and one or other drive being effected by the pinions engaging driving members rigid with the lay shaft, so that each wheel can be separately coupled with or uncoupled from the driving wheel of the differential gear. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 having a two part lay shaft each driving wheel 5 carries a brake drum 7, the braking means I of the wheels being independently or conjointly controlled. Each wheel 5 is mounted on its stub axle 3 carrying a gear 12 meshing its driving pinion 24 slidably mounted on an output shaft 20 of the differential gear, the shafts 20 constituting the lay shaft and the pinions 24 being independently controlled by rods 31. Each shaft 20 carries a dog-clutch element 25 constituting the driving element and adapted to be engaged, as shown in Fig. 1, with a corresponding element on one end of the pinion 24. The other end of the pinion 24 carries another dog-clutch element adapted to engage with a corresponding element on the differential casing 16. The pinions each have three grooves 26 engageable by a spring-loaded ball 27 corresponding to three positions of the pinions; the first engagement between the pinion and the member 25 enabling a different drive of the wheels, the second the neutral position corresponding to the wheels not being driven, and the third engagement between the pinion and the casing 16 enabling a non-differential drive of the wheels through the driving wheel 15 rigid with the casing 16 and an engine-driven worm 14. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, having a single part lay shaft the differential casing 16 is connected by an element 17a with the lay shaft 20b and the slideable pinions 24 are each adapted to form a dog-clutch engagement with a differential sun gear 19 for the drive through the differential or with the member 25 rigid with the shaft 20 for the non-differential drive.
