647,010. Variable-speed gearing. BILLOTTI, L. Feb. 6, 1948, No. 3563. Convention date, Nov. 23, 1946. [Class 80(ii)] [Also in Group XXXI) An integral clutch, change-speed gear and differential gear unit for front wheel driven vehicles comprises a casing having compartments 3, 4 and 5 for the clutch, differential gear, and change-speed gear respectively. The driving shaft 8 from the clutch passes through a hollow driven shaft 11 of the change-speed gear which has a hypoid bevel pinion 14 at its forward end engaging a corresponding bevel gear 15 of a differential unit (not shown) driving two transversely extending shafts to the vehicle wheels. The shaft 11 has sliding gears and clutch elements 26, 30 and freely rotatinig gears 24, 25 co-operating with gears 23, 21, 22 on a countershaft 20 driven from a gear 18 on the far end of the shaft 8 to give four forward speeds and a reverse by an additional sliding gear pair 28, 29.
